We have run writing and filmmaking workshops for the BBC, Creative Partnerships, Media Box, The Arc, New Writing North, mima and schools across the region.
Writers’ Block provides training, collaboration, showcasing and networking opportunities for emerging creative talent. Since launching in March we’ve produced five films, two animations, eight plays and three radio dramas with new talent from the region.
As well as running various in-house film, theatre, creative writing and story development projects, we now deliver screenwriting and filmmaking workshops in schools, arts centres and at festivals. Recent jobs include:
July 2010 – We worked with Northern Architecture to deliver screenwriting workshops as part of the BSF programme
August 2010 – We ran the week-long filmmaking academy at the Berwick Film and Media Festival (a Media Box funded scheme)
September-December 2010 – We run the popular writing and performance group every week at The Arc in Stockton, which will culminate in three evening performances of a show devised and performed by the participants.
October 2010 – We delivered ‘Make a Film in Two Hours’ workshops for BBC Blast.
October 2010 – We ran a series of workshops in partnership with the Middlesbrough Museum of Modern Art (mima) as part of their Apprenticeship scheme.
Update: after 3 long years we’re back! Here’s what we run and support in 2014 – 2015:
November 2014 – NCwriters, The Fall Conference. Hundreds of writers gathered from around the country, great opportunity for one-on-one manuscript critiques with editors or agents.
January – February, 2015 – Writing an essay that is 100% original, another academic writing challenge we support. Make those college days work for you! Prize amount to be anounced.
February 12-15, 2015 – Want to be a Successfully Published Author?, visit San Francisco Writers Conference at Mark Hopkins Hotel. More than fifty sessions in four days with major presenters and copious networking with the people who can advance a writing career.
We also run ongoing writing, filmmaking and drama projects with Arc, Club Creative and Earthbeat Theatre Company for adults with learning disabilities.
We have a number of popular off-the-peg writing and filmmaking workshops, and we are also more than happy to devise schemes of work to cater exactly to a client’s needs and wants.
We are also in a position to take the completed pieces to a wider audience where relevant – for example, we recently made a film at St. Joseph’s in Middlesbrough which went on to be screened as part of the Discover Middlesbrough Festival in September 2010.
Other Writers’ Block workshop-produced films have screened at the Concept film event at Teesside University, and on BBC big screens nationwide.
We’d love further opportunities to work in the community and in local schools and colleges. If you think there may be ways we could work together, please get in touch.
